6 Top Effects Stress has on Your Skin

When life has you stressed to the max, you probably show it all over your face. And we don’t mean your facial expressions. You don’t have to furrow your brow and utter a single word…your stressed out skin will speak volumes. It’s important to handle stress properly for your overall health and well-being, but if you want your skin to look healthy and fabulous, dealing with that stress head-on is the only way to stop skin stress in its tracks.

Eat right, sleep right, and keep active to lessen the burdens of your stress, or you may find these 6 unsightly skin effects that are a direct result of that stress.

1. Under-Eye Bags

Tossing and turning all night? That lack of good sleep will show in the form of puffy eyes. Try to find your center of chill and don’t sleep on your stomach (it just allows fluids to pool under your eyes more!).

2. Dry, Flaky Skin

It’s easier to be dehydrated when you’re stressed out. In fact, you’re likely not grabbing enough of it during those stressy times so get chugging. It helps keep your skin from drying out and prevents crepiness.

3. Acne

By and large, the most common sign of stress that shows up on your skin is acne. That’s because stress causes our bodies to release the stress hormone known as cortisol. This hormone doesn’t like to party alone either…it tears up the place, disrupting the balance of your other hormones and your good gut bacteria.

4. Rashes

Stress causes inflammation levels in the body to soar, and when they do, you might find a random rash spreading across your lovely skin. This is caused by an imbalance in your gut. Make sure you eat enough probiotics to help balance things out!

5. Red Face

When your boss piles more work on your desk and you have no idea how to get it done on time, those short, fast breaths you unwittingly take can cause your face to flush. Pull out your compact and try to powder it all you like but you’ll still look red-faced. Taking control of your breathing, trying aromatherapy, and thinking of your happy place can make flushed skin vanish away.

6. Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Yup, you can blame stress for any little lines you might see on your face. While these do come with age, the more you stress and let your facial expressions like furrowing your brows or pursing your lips, the more it embeds them in the deepest layers of your skin.

Don’t let stress win the war. Instead, focus on your health and well-being. Take care of yourself by nourishing your body with healthy foods, taking the time to rest, exercising, and using quality skincare products to mitigate the damages. Meditation and other calming methods are a great way to handle stress too. Nothing stops stress from coming on, but by knowing how to handle it, you can prevent the long-term effects of it from harming your skin and your health.
